Mortice Locks How Do They Work ?

As Birchwood Locksmiths we know there is still plenty of mortice locks about especially on older properties. Commonly known as Chubb locks to people of a certain age (including myself) they are normally either sashlock or deadlock varieties and can be 2,3 or 5 levers or more. For security and insurance requirements customers in Birchwood should always have a British Standard 3621 mortice lock fitted on external doors.

So how do they work ? in basic terms if you insert the correct key into the lock this simultaneously lifts the levers to the correct height and turns the curtain which opens a gate allowing the bolt stump to pass through and retract the bolt thus opening the lock.Its a very simple but highly effective way of securing your doors.
